A parish and city of Louisiana inhabited by the Attakapas Native Americans during the first European encounterment. Many Acadians refugees who were expelled from Canada, after the seven-year war, settled in Lafayette and intermarried and formed what is known as Cajun culture. Lafayette was named in 1884 after the Marquis/General Lafayette who help write the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen with Thomas Jefferson's assistance.
