The process of Black women’s hair is a journey that connects us as a community. Pride along with crazy creates inventive and familiar hairstyles. I am celebrating the individual choices of Black women’s hair; I begin the collection creating headdresses representing my personal hair journey from youth to adulthood. The headwear uses donated recycled materials from hair salons and individuals that are constructed into wearable art. The story of my hair made from recycled materials is not only intended to create a space for an exchange of dialogue about Black women’s hairstyles, but also our effect on the environment through consumer consumption.
Art+Hair was exhibited at WoCa Gallery in Forth Worth, Texas curated by Lauren Cross.
