Jeanerette in the 18th century was acquired from the Spanish government by a French colonist Pierre Zerangue, then later by Nicholas Provost who engaged in the cultivation of sugar, where the city is known as “the sweetest place in Louisiana” The city derived it’s name from John W. Jeanerette a native of South Carolina, who 1830 bought the Pine Grove Plantation known as Beau Pre.
