Hair + Art
Hair + Art
2013

Opening August 17th: WoCA Projects presents a site-specific exhibition, Art + Hair: Narratives Through Stylized Consumption, featuring sculptural headdresses by fiber artist Chesley Williams. The highlighted works are informed by current dialogues surrounding African American hair in contemporary American society, and are inspired by Williams’ personal hair journey from youth to adulthood. Williams’ headdresses symbolize African American hairstyling practices using donated recycled materials from local hair salons and individuals—resources that were once deemed as trash or waste. Williams’ eco-consciousness signifies her own philosophy towards an environmentally sustainable world.

WoCA Projects will feature Art + Hair during FWADA’s Fall Gallery Night on September 7th, and will put on an accompanying programming event, The Art + Hair Show, on Saturday, September 14th from 6-9 p.m. The event will feature a performatve art and hair showcase displaying William’s headdresses and couture natural hair designs by the Loc Star Natural Hair Design Studio in Fort Worth, created by the Natural Hair Artistry of Paulette Anderson, Owner and Lock Designer and Adachi Dada, Natural Hair Creatress.
